Easter in Northumberland
Spring is finally here! The nights are lighter, the days are longer and there is lots to see and do in Northumberland
Easter seems to be the mile post in the world of UK tourism, however we find that our cottages are busy all year round!
Never the less Easter is often the time we hope the weather is better, more attractions are open for the season and the schools are on holiday. Easter definitely brings with it a buzz of egg-citement!
You can more or less guarantee that all the large attractions in Northumberland will be well prepared for Easter with lots going on.
Here’s our 2023 round up!
The Alnwick Garden
The Alnwick Garden is often a main stay of visiting Northumberland and gets a lot of press, but that is often because they have an abundance of activities packed into their diary. Experiences for the whole family await!
This Easter The Alnwick Garden aren’t hunting for eggs, but hunting for treasure with their pirate themed treasure hunt!
The annual duck race also takes place in the garden cascade on Saturday 8th April, a fun packed event, purchase your duck via The Alnwick Round Table and see if your rubber duck have what it takes to win some great prizes!
Don’t forget to also keep a close eye on their Blossom Watch camera. This is their live camera on their website showing the stage of the blossom coming into bloom. A great tool if you want to plan your trip and try and hit the right time to see the Taihaku cherry blossom in all it’s glory!
Ad Gefrin
The all new and much anticipated Ad Gefrin has opened in Wooler! This brand new Anglo Saxon and Whisky Distillery is now open and well worth adding to the visit list. Northumbrian Whisky making has been re-awakened after 200 years, what’s more it’s only a stones thrown from our very own Swallows Rest
Wallington Hall
For a more traditional event, book in an Easter visit to the National Trust’s Wallington Hall and once there, the family can take on the nature trail Easter Egg hunt. Gallop through the woodland completing the trail for your chocolatey surprise!
Bamburgh Castle
Bamburgh Castle have a range of activities on over the Easter break. Hope, the resident dragon has an Easter trail for the family to take part in. Follow the clues, solve the puzzle to claim your prize or take in some Easter craft projects during your visit.
Heatherslaw Light Railway
Open from 1st April 2023. Ride the most northernly steam railway in Northumberland at Heatherslaw Light Railway. A fantastic day out that can take in the sights of Ford and Etal Estates. Enjoy a pub lunch at The Black Bull. Tea and Scones at The Lavender Tea Rooms rummage through the antiques at Old Forge Antiques. A day for the whole family!
It can sometimes seem like holidays and attractions can be expensive at times but they don’t have to be. You can steer clear of the main stay visitor attractions and head for lower cost or free things to do.

Have a wild day out and really immerse yourself in nature. This wildlife rich landscape offers one of the best wildlife watching spots in the north east and is right next to the beach.
It is wheel chair friendly too! Grab your binoculars and maybe a pencil and paper and see what you can spot. Alternatively just go to enjoy the scenery and peace and quiet.
